But what I love most about Lake Como weddings is the possibility of turning the destination itself into part of the celebration.
Instead of gathering everyone for a single wedding day, many couples choose to create a complete wedding weekend: a welcome dinner, the wedding day itself and a farewell brunch, boat trip or poolside gathering.
This gives your guests time to settle in, enjoy the lake and experience Italy together rather than simply arriving for the ceremony and leaving the next morning.
Of course, not every couple wants the same experience. Some prefer a small celebration with their closest friends and family. Others are looking for a large-scale wedding with several hundred guests and a highly produced weekend.
The first step is therefore not choosing the most famous venue. It is understanding what kind of experience you want to create.
Choosing the Right Lake Como Wedding Venue
Your venue will influence almost every other aspect of your wedding: the number of guests you can invite, accommodation, catering, transportation, ceremony options, event timings and even the way your wedding weekend flows.
Lake Como offers a remarkable variety of possibilities.
You might imagine a grand celebration at Villa Erba, an intimate gathering at Villa Regina Teodolinda, a multi-day experience at Villa Pliniana or a contemporary celebration at Villa Lario.
There are also iconic villas such as Villa Balbiano, Villa Pizzo, Villa Sola Cabiati and Villa del Balbianello, each offering a very different atmosphere and guest experience.
Rather than trying to find a universally “best” Lake Como wedding venue, I recommend choosing the property that makes sense for your guest list, your priorities and the experience you want to create.

Private Villa or Luxury Hotel?
One of the first decisions couples often face when planning a wedding on Lake Como is whether to choose a private villa or a luxury hotel.
Both can work beautifully, but they create very different experiences.
Private Villas
A private villa can give your wedding a strong sense of place and intimacy.
Historic architecture, gardens, terraces and direct access to the lake can become part of the celebration. Some properties can also accommodate your guests, allowing the wedding weekend to feel like a private gathering rather than a traditional hotel stay.
For couples who want complete privacy and a highly personalized atmosphere, this can be an excellent option.
The logistics, however, can be more complex. Catering, furniture, staff, accommodation and transportation may all need to be coordinated separately.
Luxury Hotels
A luxury hotel offers a different kind of convenience.
Accommodation, restaurants, service and guest facilities are already integrated into the property. This can make things easier when you are bringing together guests travelling from different countries.
Hotels can also work particularly well for couples who want their guests to enjoy the destination without having to organize every aspect of the weekend themselves.
There is no right or wrong answer. The choice depends on the atmosphere you want and the level of privacy, service and flexibility you are looking for.
How to Plan a Lake Como Wedding Weekend
One of my favourite ways to approach a Lake Como destination wedding is to think beyond the wedding day itself.
A three-day celebration could look something like this:
Day 1: Welcome Your Guests
Your guests have travelled a long way to be there, so the first evening is an opportunity to bring everyone together in a relaxed way.
This could be a welcome dinner overlooking the lake, a casual Italian meal or cocktails followed by dinner.
The idea is not necessarily to create another formal event. It is to give everyone a chance to meet, reconnect and begin the celebration together.
Day 2: The Wedding
The wedding day becomes the centre of the weekend.
Depending on your venue, this might include a ceremony overlooking the lake, cocktails in the gardens, dinner on a terrace and dancing late into the evening.
The design, music, food and entertainment can all be developed around your personality rather than following a predetermined formula.
Day 3: A Final Experience
The final day can be much more relaxed.
A farewell brunch, pool party or private boat experience gives everyone one last opportunity to enjoy Lake Como together before heading home.
This is also where the destination itself becomes part of the wedding story.
Planning for International Wedding Guests
For couples living abroad, guest logistics are often one of the biggest parts of destination wedding planning.
Your guests may be travelling from several different countries, arriving on different days and staying in different properties.
Accommodation, airport transfers, local transportation and activities therefore need to be considered as part of the overall wedding experience.
Lake Como also has a geography of its own. The lake stretches across numerous towns and villages, and travelling from one side to another can take longer than it appears on a map.
This is why I always encourage couples to think about logistics early rather than treating transportation as a detail to solve later.
Boat transportation can be an especially memorable way of moving guests around the lake, but it also needs to be coordinated carefully around schedules, weather and the location of each event.
For international couples, this local knowledge can make a real difference.
Creating an Experience for Your Guests
A destination wedding gives you an opportunity to share a place that means something to you with the people you love.
Lake Como offers plenty of possibilities beyond the wedding itself.
Depending on your interests and schedule, your guests might enjoy a private boat excursion, a relaxed lunch, a visit to one of the lake’s villages or simply time together at the hotel or villa.
I don’t believe every wedding needs to be filled with activities.
Sometimes the best guest experience comes from giving people enough time to slow down, enjoy the setting and spend time together.
The goal is to create a weekend that feels generous without becoming exhausting.
How Much Does a Lake Como Wedding Cost?
There is no single price for a Lake Como wedding.
The budget can vary considerably depending on the venue, guest count, number of days, accommodation, catering, production, design, entertainment and transportation.
A small intimate celebration and a fully privatized three-day wedding for more than 100 guests are two completely different projects.
This is why I prefer to approach the budget from the beginning of the planning process rather than presenting couples with a generic “average Lake Como wedding cost”.
Your guest count and priorities should determine where the budget goes.
For example, you may decide that an extraordinary venue and exceptional food are your priorities, while keeping the décor more restrained. Another couple may prefer to invest heavily in production, entertainment or a multi-day guest experience.
A well-planned budget is not simply about spending less. It is about making conscious choices about what matters most to you.
